I was given some Adobe Illustrator "ai" graphics files that I'm supposed to work with.  The problem is I don't have adobe illustrator.  Not only that, I can't AFFORD adobe illustrator. I'm just talking about the illustrator not this CS5 bundle that I would have to trade my car in to get.   I will only need the graphics for one web page.

Is there any other platform that can extract the graphics into a format that I can work with?
Is there nay value in biting the bullet on this outrageously expensive software?

What's the best way to handle these ai files so that I can build a web page at a reasonable price?   Any expert advice is appreciated.

Corel Draw is another vector program that some see as more affordable.

For the free (no cost) or free-as-in-libre crowds, there is Inkscape. There is also Xara Xtreme if you're on  *nix platform (Windows version costs money though). Either can work with the AI format.

Have you looked into "open Office .org" draw?? I personally use illustrator. If you use photoshop you can open AI files in it as well

The idea of having an alternative to illustrator is great. Unfortunately if you need to work commercially illustrator and to a lesser degree corel draw (depending on industry)are your only real options, which is difficult when you need illustrator only "once".

I personally believe if you are doing commecial work you need commercial tools and the costs need to be figured into your business plan.

An option that will work only once is to download a Trial version of illustrator (or the whole creative suite) and you will have 30 days to work until the demo expires.
