There is a website I visited - for a town in Switzerland.

In my browser (Firefox on Win 7) I type in www.disentis.ch and I get to a webpage that shows  that as an adress with a couple of options concerning the language I want to view.
However if I type in disentis.ch (without the www. first) then I go to another webpage for logging into the e-mail system.

Why is there this difference ?   I thought that just entering disentis.ch would result in firefox prepending the www. and go to that site (it does with every other site I can think of).

Whoever manages the DNS zone can make the naked domain and the www behave differently.  They do not have to be the same.

Separate servers with different IP addresses.

disentis.ch = 217.118.202.140

www.disentis.ch = 217.118.199.202
