I'm looking for guidance on possible throughput on a Cisco 1921 dual-gigabit router or a 2811 versus a Cisco Catalyst 3750 L3 switch. No services enabled, static routing or OSPF only. I have both solutions in production and would like to standardize. I see both are capable of 100Mbps, but we are going to a 1Gbps link, and I need to figure out the proper future plans for the hardware & purchases.

Looking for specific numbers & calculations to help back it up. I generally like $1000 the 1900 versus the $3000 on the 3750, the simpler architecture, and flexilbity, but need to get best possible throughput.

The main benefits of the 3750 are switch stacking with speeds up to 64Gbps and a backplane speed of 32Gbps up to 68Gbps, depending on model.  That's handy for servers or anything with very heavy I/O, but speeds like that are generally no needed on a core router.  Also, the 3750 is a L3 switch, so there are things it can't do.  For connecting to a 1Gbps uplink, and having all the commands and options that routers have, go with the 2811 for 1921.

Is this a Gigabit wan connection you are going to, because the 2811 will need to have a Gigabit wan card installed into it in order to get gigabit. I would go with the 1921 since you will need some type of firewall if the router is plugging directly into your internet connection. Is there already a firewall in the mix? If so, go with the 3750.

This is for private connectivity between locations. Firewalling / WAN connectivity is already done. I know that a dual-ethernet 2600 router capped out around 30Mbps each direction, or 60Mbps through it, when I expected it to do 100Mbps in one & out the other interface.

I have seen the 1900 series work perfectly for 100Mbps, I'm just looking for some backing on getting the best possible routed performance for this new gigabit link. I think the 2800 is out of the mix, but still unsure on catalyst or router.

If firewalling and wan connectivity is done, go with the 3750.

Anyone able to provide the specific numbers requested that'd help calculate probable throughput on these devices? I always try to back things up so we're not having to re-architect down the road.

Here are some stats from Cisco on router versus switch performance.  The 1900 seems to be missing some data though.

The 3750 appears faster on paper, but I don't see any evidence that one will utilize a 100 Mbps uplink better then the other.

If you go with a 1900, would you then have to get a L2 switch to provide the port connections?  A single 3750 might cost more then a router and a L2 switch, but having a single device simplifies the install and support.  But a router will probably have more options and support for future needs (VOIP, video, etc)
