Our Dell E6500 currently as Seagate 160GB 7200 HDD (factory oem). I'm trying to install a new WD 250GB 5400 HDD and keep getting the same error upon completing the Windows Vista Business x64 installation:

"Windows Setup could not configure Windows on this computer’s hardware"

1. Upgraded BIOS from A06 (factory oem) to current A26
2. Comfirmed 250GB drive is not too large (Dell Service Tag Lookup: HDD upgrades allow max 750GB)

Help!

Have you checked the drive configuration in the BIOS?
This is for Windows 7 and Server but applies to Vista as well

Some further information will be helpful to diagnose the problem.

Is the old drive IDE or SATA?  Is the new drive IDE or SATA?  What is the model number of the new drive?

Solved: I changed the BIOS setting 'SATA Mode' from IRRT to AHCI...

See "Figured it out!!" (near bottom of page).

I think your question was answered by MASQUERAID.

"Method 2: Change the BIOS hard disk drive setting to AHCI or IDE"

This is quite a common fix for this type of issue.

"Only solution that worked" ??
Really?  Wasn't this the same fix as described in the Microsoft link at the top of the thread?
