Hi,
is there a software that will enable you to edit songs on a cd for instance so that you can make some songs shorter in duration etc?  Or is this possible within windows media player or itunes?  thanks.

I do not believe that the basic functionality in Media Player or iTunes will allow you to do this.

Please note that iTunes files (.mp4) are encrypted and cannot be natively imported into any editing package. Some "magic" is required to make them work.

You could download the free Audacity program - an excellent, fully features audio editor. Not only will it allow you to slice and dice audio files, you can get plugins to speed-up or slow down the audio to your liking.

Audacity can be downloaded, here: http://audacity.sourceforge.net/

If you are wanting to do some higher-end audio editing and production work, I also recommend Audio REAPER: http://www.reaper.fm/
