Which dashboard? What cloud? Often your cloud login credentials are not the same as your FTP credentials. Sometimes FTP isn't even setup on a cloud machine. We need more info to attempt an assist.

Ah, wordpress dashboard does not use ftp to my knowledge.

Wait, this blog post rings a bell:
"Wordpress Automatic Update Asking for FTP" (is that the issue?)

You'll need to make sure the server has permission to write files where needed. Let me know if that helps.

Well, you are the owner of your files, but apache/WordPress isn't. :)

This page, "File permissions" section has some really good info on how to treat your files and folders.

Let me know if I can provide additional info.

What are you trying to update in the dashboard.

The one-click, core update?

Plugin updates?

If it's your plugins try chmod 777 on your plugins directory.

If its everything and you have SSH access you can try this

chmod 755 -R public_html

Getting an FTP message in WordPress means that your folder permissions are not set correctly, so it uses FTP options as backup (my initial comment was wrong - WordPress may support FTP settings as an alternative to setting folder permissions since version 2.7 I think). If you want to keep FTP, this article may help you get that setup without getting the prompt. Checkout the comments for further discussion on permissions:
http://admindaily.com/how-to-stop-wordpress-ftp-to-upgrade-plugins.html

Here's a blog post explaining the issue pretty plainly:
http://www.chrisabernethy.com/why-wordpress-asks-connection-info/

Here's a video that explains how to change folder permission for WordPress and cPanel (I learn best by watching others personally). If you use another hosting control panel like that of Godaddy or something, let me know and maybe I can find a video more specific to your needs. You can do this via command line and most FTP programs. Let me know if you want instructions for Mac or PC:

OK I think that the problem is that the owner of the main folder which the eord press site in is 1002 but im not sure that changing it will not cause damage to other content in the same folder as well
any thought?

Does Wordpress run under the same user as your FTP user? If not then wordpress may not have the permissions to use the FTP user's directories. If not the same user are they in the same group, this may help, or you could ask the ISP to turn safemode off?
