in sql 2000, we had to change collation of db, and only the new objects created after that will get affected by the new collation.. this is a lot of work if you want to upgrade the whole db's collation.. (say binary to non-case sensitive).. is there any new features in R2 to expedite such a upgrade?

AFAIK it's still the same, no way to automatically change collation for all string fields in an existing DB.  Well, not out-of-the-box.

But I did come across an interesting approach, proposed by our colleague-expert rrjegan17 - see here: http://www.qa.downappz.com/Microsoft/Development/MS-SQL-Server/SQL-Server-2005/Q_24538740.html
