We have about 3-400 mobile laptop users that never work on the compagny network. OS is windows xp. Is there any way to control these computers settings and contents in a way that mimics AD GPO functionality. Thinking host/client-agent solution or something

Cloud based computer server with Linux with active directory services will allow you to manage it much like a domain controller for windows plus with cloud hosting it's scalable.

Could you elaborate on this please? You mean set up linux server with bind? Acessible from where? DMZ? Would not something like a "pre boot" VPN solution be more applicable? Cisco can offer a solution like this, but i dont know it is compatible with juniper hardware, which is what we have on VPN.

Could you write a simple bat script that would execute after the users connected with a VPN

script would be:
gpupdate /force

This would at least keep them updated.

Looking at XP a little further, the scheduled tasks don't have that many options as vista and 7 do.  You could blindly have it run once a day, say at noon.  Or bundle it with a business application shortcut to run because you know they would be connected to the VPN.

We went with Windows 7 Enterprise and a DirectAccess server.
