Hello EE members,
We have a client who currently runs WHS in a workgroup for 4 users. They are merging with another company who will require their workstations to join a domain for purpose of connecting to Exchange only. All workstations are professional level so domain membership will be available. They will have no other access to the domain just become part of AD and have Exchange mailbox. They will require the current user accounts to be changed as well to follow their naming scheme.

We were asked to move the Home Server into place so they can still use the WHS file server and the backup features of WHS.

Our question is will the WHS need to be joined to the domain as well or can it still operate in the workgroup? We feel it will need to be part of the domain and then create only the new user accounts that are tied to the current company users but would like any input as to best practices to plan this move. We do not have a test platform to conduct a trial and need to be completed by Friday.
Thank you and if any more info is needed please ask.

Joining WHS to a domain is both unsupported and against the EULA for WHS.  I do not believe the workstations will support the WHS backup features once joined to a domain either.

An alternative would be to create domain accounts for the users for the purposes of Exchange, and just have them enter the credentials when they open Outlook.

Thank you. I guess I should read EULA once in a while. The issue has been worked out the company that has the domain is not requiring the workstations to join the domain and will use Exchange as OWA. Problem solved and we can still use the WHS.
